Gabriel Ramírez Aznar
Gabriel was born on January 4, 1938 in Mérida, Yucatán. In 1959 he began to paint and exhibited for the first time in 1965 at the Juan Martín Gallery in Mexico City; That same year he participated in the IV Youth Biennale in Paris, France. Three years later he became a founding member of the Independent Salon.
He has been the recipient of various national and international awards, including: the “Joan Miró” International Drawing Prize in its 1972 and 1975 editions, in Barcelona, Spain; the Yucatán Medal (1986) awarded by the government of his native state; FONCA scholarship holder as an artistic creator (1989 and 1999); the Antonio Mediz Bolio Literary Award (1997) for La Cosa Cultural, a section dedicated to his essays published in the cultural supplement Unicornio and the Medal of Artistic Merit from the Yucatán Institute of Culture (1998).
His work is found in collections and in foreign and national museums: Bezebel Museum, Jerusalem, Israel; the House of the Americas, Havana, Cuba; the Museum of Solidarity with Chile, Santiago, Chile; the Museum of the Revolution, Managua, Nicaragua; the Alfa de Monterrey Cultural Center; the Carrillo Gil Museum; the José Luis Cuevas Museum; the Mexican Plastic Arts Hall; the University Museum of Sciences and Art (MUCA); the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey and the Industrial Club of Mexico, among others.
