Federico Espinosa (1963 – 2017), known in the art world as Chacpol, was a self-taught visual artist born in Mérida, Yucatán. He made his artistic debut in this same city in February 2008 with his creation of Photo-Sculptures titled “The Doors of Yucatán.” Following this series, he had over 40 exhibitions of his Photo-Sculptures, both solo and group shows, in various galleries and museums across Mexico.
His notable international participation in the Florence Biennale 2009 earned him an honorable mention for one of his photographs from the collection “Altars of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Yucatán,” of which he had the honor of personally presenting a copy to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in St. Peter's Square.
His works have been well received and have been sold at auctions and through art galleries to various countries. Chacpol also ventured into cultural management and the organization of artistic events. In October 2010, he coordinated the presentation of Dutch visual artist Carina Dumais at the main gallery of Teatro Peón Contreras in Mérida, with the event sponsored by the Piet Mondrian Foundation. He also worked on the coordination for an international group exhibition scheduled to take place in Mérida every year starting from March 2012.
