5 Movies about mexican artists
Articles | 28 SEP 2020 Por Redacción

In this national month, we want to celebrate not only Mexico, but also the unforgettable artists who have represented it through the plastic arts, which is why this time we will share 5 films about Mexican artists:

1. Walls of Fire (1971)

Perhaps one of the first ideas that comes to mind when talking about Mexican art is muralism. This production brings together the work of the 3 most famous muralists in Mexico: Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco. The work of these giants of muralism is examined throughout the film and at the same time the movement as such is analyzed. Other great artists are also mentioned such as Rufino Tamayo, considered the 4th most important muralist after the 3 standards of art already mentioned.

2. Frida (2002)

A very famous film by an equally famous artist, Frida Kahlo, one of the best-known painters in Mexico, lived a life full of tragic moments that marked both her life and her art. This feature film feels like a slightly more subtle version of Frida's life, but that covers each of these moments in an endearing way. Certainly, a light biographical film that does not lose its most important characteristic, making the viewer stand at the feet of the character.

3. The mural (2010)

As the title indicates, the center of the story is a mural, one that was of great importance in the life of its creator, David Alfaro Siqueiros. The feature film is a dramatization of Siqueiros's life and what social and political situations led him to paint the famous mural “Plastic Exercise” in 1933 in Argentina. The reason that makes this mural so famous and iconic is not only its extension of 200 square meters, but also the controversial nature of its location, being in the basement of a private property, which went against the ideals of Siqueiros that murals must be visible to anyone in a public space. The story of why and how he did it is told from a political and artistic perspective, words that could describe the artist's entire life and not just this stage.

4. In search of a wall (1974)

In New York, the life of the Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco was in a somewhat difficult stage, opening a new phase of his artistic career in a place where he was practically unknown. However, with the help of a journalist, the artist makes his way into New York society and creates ties with various important figures in the city's intellectual circles. While he is working to achieve success in the United States, Orozco remembers different important moments that he has experienced and this is how the feature film becomes an autobiographical story of the artist, where he tells from memories that marked him in his childhood, to his training. artistic and even the creation of muralism by Dr. Atl, among other notable events in his life.

5. The revolution and the artists (2018)

Dr. Atl, one of the greatest landscape painters in Mexico and master of the unforgettable triad of muralists, lived a love story with the poet and painter Carmen Mondragon, whom he would baptize as “Nahui Ollin”. This story is told throughout this film while other important aspects of the artist's life are revealed, such as the different areas in which he had participation and relevance, such as politics and education in the 1920s. In areas where one normally does not imagine the role and importance of an artist, Dr. Atl proved not only to have been indispensable in the change, but also a giant who left a mark of every step he took throughout the life of he.
