Meet Ai-da, the humanoid robot that will participate in the Venice Biennale
International | 25 MAR 2022 Por Redacción

For the first time in the 120-year history of the Venice Biennale, an artist arrives who represents the advances in biotechnology and the presence of transhumanism in the art world: Ai-da. As the play on words in her name suggests, the artist is a humanoid robot specially designed and programmed to create art from artificial intelligence.

The team behind Ai-da – Lucy Seal, Aidan Meller and the company Engineered Arts – recognizes her as a project focused on the ethical questions that are created about the use we give to technology today and her art is considered as a collaboration between human and machine. In turn, the emotions, criticisms and opinions that Ai-da arouses, with her work and as an artist, are part of the purpose with which she was created, since she represents a mirror of currents and trends in our current times.

Since its creation in 2019, Ai-da has created poems, paintings and sculptures, having a presence in exhibitions throughout the world and intervening artistically in places like London and Egypt. Considering the above, the creation and artistic production of Ai-da could represent a key moment in the history of art.

For the Venice Biennale in Giardini that will take place in April this year, Ai-da will participate by exhibiting her work alongside human artists as one of us. This event should not only be seen as an event for history, but as a turn to the world of contemporary art, the ethics within it and reflect on those who can make art. Once again, we find ourselves with a revolution in art that overcomes the superficial conceptions of what we consider art and who we call artists.
