Mexican artist wins international prize of Art and Technology
National | 05 NOV 2020 Por Redacción

The Lumen Prize is an award originally from Wales created by Carla Rapoport, a former finance reporter, who seeks to increase the appreciation and dissemination of art created with technology, promoting artists who develop in this field. Since 2012, it has awarded more than $80,000 in annual prizes to artists from around the world who have won in the Lumen Prize categories.

This 2020, the “Lumen Prize Gold Award”, which is awarded to the most outstanding artistic project of the call, went to the work “Nuestra Victoria / Our Victory” by the Mexican Julieta Gil. The artist made a digital and three-dimensional replica of the Angel of Independence after it was scratched by attendees of the feminist marches in August 2019. The work shows an enormous amount of details, but the artist herself declares that it is not a 100% reliable reproduction: “the errors and defects of the work serve as a metaphor for the fragility of patriarchal institutions.”

With this reproduction, Gil seeks to create digital evidence of all the phrases and drawings that the activists left and that were later erased by the authorities, so that the demands and protests of the women of Mexico are not forgotten, and are preserved in memory. collective of the country. “(The work is) an aesthetically appealing still image and an important political action,” said Lumen Prize jury member Nathan Ladd.

On her social networks, Julieta Gil thanked “all the brave women who fight tirelessly to end violence.” To appreciate all the details of the work, you can find the video at the following link: https://youtu.be/T-cuCIDPDXI
