Leonora Carrington's house in Mexico City becomes museum
National | 31 MAY 2021 Por Redacción

On May 24, one day before Leonora Carrington's tenth birthday, the media broadcast the presentation of the artist's new museum “La Casa-Studio de Leonora Carrington” in what was her residence in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City.

The house was acquired in 2017 by the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM) for $500,000 USD as part of an arrangement with Pablo Weisz Carrington, the artist's son, for the house to be converted into a museum. Since then, a team from the UAM was in charge of cataloging the available objects and carrying out the rehabilitation of the property so that it functions as a cultural space without losing its essence. In exchange, Weisz donated 45 sculptures valued at $3 million dollars on May 18, and other personal items of the artist such as furniture, photographs, graphics and more.

In a capsule uploaded to the Instagram account @casacarrington.uam, the museum's official account, Pablo Weisz comments that before his mother died, he had a conversation with her in which he expressed his desire to create a museum in her house. Today he feels grateful that the UAM has come forward to make his promise come true.

This museum would be the third dedicated to the artist, and the first located in Mexico City; The other 2 museums are located in San Luis Potosí. The UAM is waiting for the pandemic conditions to improve so that it can open the doors of this new museum.

Currently you can learn more about the residence in its virtual tour at https://casaleonoracarrington.uam.mx/
