Picasso's Guernica replicated as chocolate
International | 26 ABR 2021 Por Redacción

In a day like this, 84 years ago, the bombing of Guernica occurred, an event that Picasso would immortalize in a painting that would stand next to The Ladies of Avignon (1907) as one of the most representative works of the artist's name.

As a tribute to the tragedy of the municipality, Picasso made his Guernica (1937), and yesterday, Euskal Gozogileak, with the participation of 40 professional pastry chefs from the Basque territory, presented to the media a replica of the work made with half a ton of chocolate. This happened at the inauguration of the traveling exhibition that is planned to be carried out, where the work will tour various parts of the territory of Euskadi, while dates and places outside of it have not yet been confirmed.

Arantxa Tapia, Economic Development Advisor of the Basque Government, attended the event and expressed her gratitude towards the initiative of the Basque Federation of Artisan Sweet Gastronomy, since Pablo Picasso's painting is an international Basque symbol. According to Lorena Gómez, president of Euskal Gozogileak, the purpose of the project was not only to recreate the work, but also to fuse gastronomy with art, elevate the profession of artisanal sweet gastronomy and give a message of peace and hope to the world in these difficult times of pandemic.

What is Picasso's work about?

On April 26, 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the German Condor Legion bombed the city of Guernica, a city of great importance for Basque culture, in which between 800 to 1,600 lives were lost. Picasso, as a tribute and criticism, created an enormous monochromatic work 4 meters high by 8 meters wide that, through a scene of confusion, suffering and terror, represents the pain that the people of Guernica experienced during the bombing. It is currently considered one of the most important masterpieces ever made by the Spanish artist.
